Small Things That Quicken The Heart

When the spirit is feeling a bit blue, sometimes it helps to eat something bright and alive, from nature.

If you have a garden, picking fresh flowers and salad greens for lunch is sure to quicken the heart.

Here is a mixture of calendula, borage, nasturtium, and fennel from my garden.

What a delicious mixture to add to a pot of rice and tuna!

This week has been incredibly difficult in many ways, but it is the small things that make life worth living. Something as simple as a special, fresh lunch can be enough.

  1. Joel, I don't know how else to contact you. I was researching the eating habits of Native Americans, and happened on an article you wrote for eHow about "Southeast Native American Tools." Of the tribes you listed -- Navajo, Creek, Pueblo, Seminoles, Apache and Chickasaw people -- the Creek, Seminoles, and Chickasaw lived in the Southeast, but the Navajo, Pueblo, and Apache lived in the Southwest.

  2. Hi Karen, thanks so much for this information, and for being so good as to track me down! I will try and forward this information onto the editors at eHow, though I am not sure how long it will take for them to make the changes. Sometimes quite a while. The editors and I believed the information the article was based on was accurate, so I am sorry to learn that it was not. Once again, thanks so much for the feedback!

  3. Hi Joel - I read your comment on Theodora's blog, so beautiful. So I looked you up and will add your blog in my
Bookmarks. Interest in who was first in our country; I grew up around Nez Perce and Warm Springs Indians in Idaho
and Central Oregon. Both states have beautiful still protected wilderness. I may never go to New Zealand, but I am
now connected a little closer, reading this blog. Beauty & magic; my favorite quests.

  4. Hi Joel... I make programs for Radio NZ and I'm interested in your work on natural foods. I'd like to talk to you some time about eating wild things. Is this part of what the Freegan movement is on about too? Hope to hear from you.
    Cheers David
